Shoplifters (Manbiki kazoku) (2018)

Critic Consensus: Understated yet ultimately deeply affecting, Shoplifters adds another powerful chapter to director Hirokazu Koreeda's richly humanistic filmography.

Writer-director Hirokazu Kore-eda fills the film with grace notes, humor and fine observations, circling and filling out each character while leaning more on innocence than corruption.

Kore-eda marshals his considerable talents to tell what initially appears to be another story of family love and perseverance in the margins of society.

This kind of subtle richness is not new for Kore-Eda, though it's as satisfying here as it's ever been.

Kore-eda is at his best when he's suppressing his sentimentality, not when he's indulging it, but like his characters, fans of this inspired filmmaker must learn to take the good with the bad.

It's all beautifully done, if seemingly aimless; for most of its two-hour runtime, the joy of the movie lies mostly in watching these fine actors build their beautifully flawed and lived-in characters.

Shoplifters is littered with wry humor and is refreshingly free of judgment.

I guess you can pick your family in Japan. Very interesting and disturbing. Ten times better than Roma. (1-12-19)

Reflecting on what family is and the ties that can grow between unrelated people, Koreeda gradually brings us close to his characters in this beautiful, bittersweet drama before hitting us with something quite unexpected (and brilliant) that only adds new layers of meaning to it.

Thereï¿ 1/2(TM)s a natural hesitance going into foreign films for anyone, right? Like, youï¿ 1/2(TM)re semi-scared to even enter into this world of another culture because you know you may not fully understand everything going on or the context of certain decisions and/or traditions, but know to get to a point where you do comprehend you just have to dive in. Thatï¿ 1/2(TM)s not just me, right? Shoplifters, director Hirokazu Koreedaï¿ 1/2(TM)s simple ode to the idea that you have no choice in the matter of who some of the most influential people in your life might be AKA your family, despite being a Japanese-language film centered around a lower class Japanese family (a world I know absolutely nothing about) connects almost immediately. Pulling the viewer into this fresh dynamic and establishing the six participating individuals with their own voices there is no turning back after only a mere few minutes in their world. There is a natural simplicity to the introductions of the characters and the establishing of their claustrophobic world even as the context of their situation becomes increasingly complicated. Effortlessly captivating would be one way of describing it.
